Green leafy plants grow 2-3 times as fast in an aquaponic system.

There's usually a healthy amount of nitrogen in an aquaponic system from the nitrogen cycle taking place (ammonia from the fish turning into nitrates). Nitrogen is involved in photosynthesis which makes food for the plants.

So what are some edible greens? Herbs are a great choice: basil, sage, parsley, cilantro, chives, lemongrass, lemon balm, thyme, oregano, mint – the list goes on.

Leafy lettuces are also perfect: chard, kale, mesclun, butter lettuce, arugula – you pick what you like.

Fruiting plants grow just as well in aquaponics as they do in the ground. And root vegetables can be grown in a media bed. So you’re pretty much covered with aquaponics.

Have fun designing your aquaponic garden this year!
